Dear Ouray Community,
I want to personally thank parents who stayed home with their students last week as influenza A and other illnesses affected so many staff and students. Our best line of defense is staying home when ill. We also have an amazing substitute pool who stepped up to ensure their was a teacher in every room and a custodial team who focused on nightly cleaning. Students practiced regular handwashing, and masks were available to those who wanted or need them. These were the main variables that allowed school to remain open for other students.
State and local health officials do not provide direct guidance on school closure for general illness as they did for COVID-19. We determined that our ability to keep the school staffed was our primary measure for continuing school. While the elementary and middle schools had significant student attendance issues, the high school operated relatively normally. As we look to return to more normal operation this week, I want to acknowledge how our school community supported one another through a difficult week.
As always, the school nurse and administration are available to answer any questions.
