Board News: Ouray BOE Purchase of Staff Housing

At a Special Meeting of the Ouray School District R-1 Board of Education on Thursday, July 18, members reviewed their interest with the district's attorney in executive session before spending time on lot prioritization. The school district was a part of the Waterview Homes lottery on Wedneseday, July 17, where it drew the 9th choice position. Board members advised Superintendent Tod Lokey that they are interested in one of the Shavano units that is a two bedroom with a flex room. This size gives the school district the most flexibility to rent to a single individual, multiple staff members, or a staff member with a family. The board approved on a 4-0 vote with one member absent for funds to engage in the purchase process for a home, solar installation, closing costs, and any incidentals related to getting the unit ready for a tenant.

This decision comes after a years-long conversation about participating in the housing challenges for Ouray School staff. New staff coming to the school struggle with overall cost of housing but also availability. Most staff start with the school in August. The district gets most of its offers for open housing in March through May.
