School Bus Route Challenges

Ouray School District does not currently have a full time route driver qualified to drive our full sized route bus for morning and afternoon routes. Staff have stepped up to meet the requirements to run two mini buses for routes beginning Tuesday, September 6, with capacity for 28 students.

In order to have a consistent and dependable bus service for Ouray students, Ouray School is looking for either a full time driver with a CDL for our larger diesel buses or additional mini bus drivers.

Big Bus Driver Requirements
To drive full sized buses, bus drivers must have a commercial drivers license (CDL) with a school bus passenger endorsement. Above the CDL, this currently requires additional coursework, written and performance exams, and a CDOT physical exam. These requirements also apply to activity drivers using the larger buses. Ouray School District will cover the costs of all exams and trainings for employees successfully completing all requirements.

Type A Multifunction Mini Buses
To drive a mutlifunction mini bus, district staff have to have a valid drivers license, complete a short online course with exam, and complete a driver orientation with the vehicles. To drive school district busing routes, employees must also get a CDOT physical (available for walk-in at Cedar Point Urgent Care) and complete a driving performance test annually.

If you are interested in supporting the district in either of these roles, please contact Vicky Trujillo at [email protected] or 970-325-4505.
