In parts one and two of the series, we introduce the prearranged absence form and defined "Chronic Absenteeism" by the state of Colorado. In this final part, we talk about district communication strategies. The approach is simple: communicate, discuss, and act.
The goal of the program is to avoid a student exceeding ten (10) absences in a semester. This goal will keep all students on track to avoid the chronic absenteeism designation.
Communication Steps
- At FIVE (5) absences in a semester, the attendance office will send an attendance notice, detailing the concern and outlining next steps
- At SEVEN (7) absences in a semester, a counselor or principal will have a phone conference with the parents/guardians.. At this conference, the student will be placed on an attendance plan to understand the nature of absences, future need for absences, and a plan for academic support and future attendance documentation.
- At TWENTY (20) absences in a school year, a letter will sent regarding "Chronic Absenteeism" with a requirement to meet to review attendance contracts, planning, and supports.
Attendance Contracts
Attendance contracts will be completely individualized; no two students have the same reasons for absence or the same academic needs. All plans will outline communication, absence reporting requirements, and academic supports. While some students may be totally up on their academics and have a minimal plan, other students may have high needs and supports.
The goal is to support all students regardless of the need or reason for missing school. These include but are not limted to the following.
- extended leaves due to COVID-19 related absences or exposures
- personal medical needs including hospitalization
- familly crises and emergencies
- repeated discretionary absences
